Hong Kong (CNN) - Protests calling on US President Donald Trump to intervene in the ongoing Hong Kong political standoff escalated rapidly Sunday, with marchers setting fire to a barricade outside a subway station entrance in the city's business district.
Earlier in the day, tens of thousands of protesters waving US flags marched on Hong Kong's US Consulate to call for help from the Trump administration in ending a three-month confrontation with the government.
The march began in the Chater Garden public park in Central before heading to the consulate as part of the 14th straight weekend of public demonstrations in the Asian financial hub. In a letter which protesters planned to presented to consulate officials, the group calls for the passing of the proposed "Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act 2019" by the US Congress.

"We share the same US values of liberty and democracy," 30-year-old banker David Wong said. "USA is a country of democracy. Donald Trump is elected by his people. We want this."
China’s worst nightmare may be happening: Mainland Chinese citizens are now participating in pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, according to recent reports.
Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that a “small cohort of mainlanders have joined the demonstrations, taking extraordinary risks to support a society that offers freedoms unavailable back home.”
“My understanding is that ‘one country, two systems’ is a creative set of ideals,” a 24-year-old Chinese graduate student living in Hong Kong with the last name Chen told the paper. “Now those ideals are threatened.”
The mainlanders said they value Hong Kong’s autonomy from Chinese control and have joined marches, signed open letters supporting Hong Kong, and defended the movement on social media.
Their participation is an indication that the movement could spread to mainland China, despite attempts by the government to brand the Hong Kong protesters as traitors.
Chinese authorities are reportedly checking travelers’ smartphones as they reenter China for evidence of participation in the demonstrations.
Another mainland Chinese citizen who took part in the protests has fled to Taiwan where he is hoping to stay, according to a report by Radio Free Asia.

Hurricane Dorian did damage to China’s mysterious massive installation in the Bahamas, only a short distance to the US mainland:
China built a port on a remote island of The Bahamas 180 miles off the U.S. coast, prompting suspicion from locals who are concerned about China’s potential military ambitions in the area. The port is currently empty, unused, and surrounded by barbed wire.
Big League Politics has learned from Bahamian sources that residents are afraid to talk about the new Chinese installation in Coopers Town, which has a population of 676 on the island of Abaco. The 45-acre port was built by the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) and is financed by the EXIM Bank of China and the Bahamian government. The port is closed and the road around it is too small for even construction trucks to drive on. Locals speculate that the port will be used for submarines.
“There is no reason at all for the port,” one local resident told Big League Politics. “The Chinese have been investing heavily, and nobody seems to know why.”
“I think so, in the future it looks like it’s going to end up being for military supplies,” the resident said. “Not many people are aware of it.”
“Some of the locals work there, but the port is closed so they laid them all off.”
“[The Chinese] just stay in the ports, they don’t walk around. They go exercising early in the morning on the road or late in the evening. They don’t socialize with anybody. Many of them don’t even speak English,” the resident said.
“People haven’t been asking about it because they know what happens,” the resident said. “Our government is filled with corruption…they come looking for you, they beat your ass, they torch you until they get what they want out of you. They have no proper interrogation methods.”
“Before they [the Chinese] leave, they leave like $800,000 for the community, they’ve been doing that all over the Carribean. They leave parks, and things like that…In Jamaica, they have invested in roads, water and sewer.”
Another commenter posted a message from a Bahamian that reads, “I just can’t wait until the U.S. media and U.S. public wake up to the fact that their government (the Obama/Hillary/Kerry government) has permitted Red China to set up shop (including deep water stealth submarine operations) in the Bahamas only a few short miles away from Florida and the entire Eastern Seaboard.
The China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) began construction on the port in North Abaco, The Bahamas, in 2014. “The port will be used to store a variety of building materials including steel, limestone and cement and other items, up to 10,000 tons,” reported the Jamaica Observer.
“The project is valued at $US49M which will be funded by the EXIM Bank of China and the Government of the Bahamas,” the China Harbour Engineering Company said on its website.
The Progressive Liberal Party in the Bahamas, which was in the majority until the 2017 elections when it became the second most-powerful party, oversaw construction of the port during its five years of governance.
Latrae Rahming, Progressive Liberal Party and Senior Chinese Caribbean Government Consultant, said in a speech in Nassau on April 9, 2016 that the Bahamas is committed to a pro-China policy (emphasis added):
“China will actively provide Military assistance to The Bahamas and defense dialogue,” Rahming said. “Recently through its agreed on obligations, China donated 1.2 million dollars to The Bahamas to purchase military equipment so as to improve jointly the capacity to respond to non-traditional security threats. Without a doubt, The Bahamas must prudently manage the complexities within the relationship. China’s growing presence in The Bahamas warrants active policy consideration. The Bahamas continues to be courteous to the advancement of China’s political, economic, social and cultural integration with the view of safeguarding it country’s long-term interest.”
“There’s a sustained perspective that China’s growing presence in the region seeks to undermine the United States strategic position and influence in its hemisphere. China’s incredibly ambitious foreign policy in The Bahamas and other Caribbean countries is Beijing continued efforts of improving its geostrategic significance unraveling its economic strength,” Rahming said in his speech, but denied that China’s influence on the islands is meant to curtail the influence of the United States.
“We always see the China through a prism of western media,” Latrae Rahming said on China Daily in June. “I think what I’ve learned is that the western media’s always been unfair to the Chinese people.”
The U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) is attempting to block the construction of an undersea cable linking Los Angeles to Hong Kong due to national security concerns.
The 8,000-mile, $300 million undersea cable would be a joint project between Google, Facebook, and a Chinese investor called Dr. Peng Telecom & Media Group. The goal of the project, formally known as the Pacific Light Network, is to establish high-speed Internet connectivity between the U.S., Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, improving traffic speed for all participants.
The Justice Department is reportedly concerned about the Chinese investor, as well as the security implications of linking L.A. systems directly to Hong Kong.
The WSJ wrote that if the project is blocked, it could “rewrite the rules of Internet connectivity between the U.S. and China.”
DOJ is part of an inter-agency review process for telecommunications issues that has approved numerous other projects with Chinese investors and partners in the past. If this undersea cable is permanently blocked, it would be the first time permission has been denied for such a project.
Google (or more precisely its parent company, Alphabet Inc.) requested permission to begin work on the Hong Kong-L.A. cable in 2017 and obtained temporary permits for preliminary construction and testing, but the Justice and Defense Departments asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to delay final approval until a national security review could be completed. The review is still officially in progress with no fixed completion date.
The Justice Department’s concerns about Dr. Peng Telecom & Media Group might be due to its partnership with Huawei, the Chinese telecom giant that has been effectively bannedfrom doing business with U.S. firms due to suspicions its equipment could be compromised by Chinese intelligence agencies.
The Trump administration has rejected over 130 requests by American companies to trade with Huawei due to national security concerns. Although President Donald Trump indicated some exemptions to the ban would be permitted, none appear to have been granted so far.

China is flexing its muscles. As the second richest economy in the world, its businessmen and politicians are involved just about everywhere in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Now, though, China is taking a big interest in a very different part of the world: the Arctic.
It has started calling itself a "near-Arctic" power, even though Beijing is almost 3,000km (1,800 miles) from the Arctic Circle. It has bought or commissioned several ice-breakers - including nuclear-powered ones - to carve out new routes for its goods through the Arctic ice.
And it is eyeing Greenland as a particularly useful way-station on its polar silk road.

In 1996, former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev emphasized the importance of using climate alarmism to advance socialist Marxist objectives: “The threat of environmental crisis will be the international disaster key to unlock the New World Order.”
IPCC official Ottmar Edenhofer, speaking in November 2010, advised that: “…one has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy. Instead, climate change policy is about how we redistribute de facto the world’s wealth…”
The late Stephen Schneider, who authored The Genesis Strategy, a 1976 book warning that global cooling risks posed a threat to humanity, later changed that view 180 degrees, serving as a lead author for important parts of three sequential IPCC reports. In a quotation published in Discover, he said: “On the one hand, as scientists we are ethically bound to the scientific method, on the other hand, we are not just scientists, but human beings as well. And like most people, we’d like to see the world a better place, which in this context translates into our working to reduce the risk of potentially disastrous climatic change. To do that, we need to get some broad-based support, to capture the public’s imagination. That, of course, entails getting loads of media coverage. So we have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements, and make little mention of the doubts we might have. Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest.”
Kevin Trenberth, a lead author of 2001 and 2007 IPCC report chapters, writing in a 2007 “Predictions of Climate” blog appearing in the science journal Nature.com, admitted: “None of the models used by the IPCC are initialized to the observed state and none of the climate states in the models correspond even remotely to the current observed state”.
Tom Crowley, a key member of Michael Mann’s global warming hockey team, wrote: “I am not convinced that the ‘truth’ is always worth reaching if it is at the cost of damaged personal relationships.”
Another scientist worries: “…clearly, some tuning or very good luck [is] involved. I doubt the modeling world will be able to get away with this much longer.”
Still another observed: “It is inconceivable that policymakers will be willing to make billion-and trillion-dollar decisions for adaptation to the projected regional climate change based on models that do not even describe and simulate the processes that are the building blocks of climate variability.”
One researcher foresaw some very troubling consequences: “What if climate change appears to be just mainly a multi-decadal natural fluctuation? They’ll kill us probably...”
Greenpeace co-founder Peter Moore: "A powerful convergence of interests. Scientists seeking grant money, media seeking headlines, universities seeking huge grants from major institutions, foundations, environmental groups, politicians wanting to make it look like they are saving future generations. And all of these people have converged on this issue."

A top fundraiser at Brown University has been placed on administrative leave -- not for any actions at Brown, but for potential issues tied to his previous role at the Massachusetts Institute for Technology.
According to Brian Clark at Brown University, “Peter Cohen began working at Brown in October 2018 as Director of Development for Computer and Data Science Initiatives. We are aware of the content of recent news reports about Mr. Cohen’s work at MIT’s Media Lab, which received funds from Jeffrey Epstein. Brown has not in its history received any funds from Jeffrey Epstein.”
Epstein’s donations to MIT include many that were hidden under “anonymous” -- due to his conviction as a sex abuser -- which reportedly was encouraged and managed by top MIT officials.
In a feature story published in the New Yorker published on Saturday, Cohen’s role masking Epstein’s donations was exposed.
“In October, 2014, the Media Lab received a two-million-dollar donation from Bill Gates; [MIT Media Lab Director Joichi] Ito wrote in an internal e-mail, 'This is a $2M gift from Bill Gates directed by Jeffrey Epstein.' Cohen replied, 'For gift recording purposes, we will not be mentioning Jeffrey’s name as the impetus for this gift.' A mandatory record of the gift filed within the university stated only that 'Gates is making this gift at the recommendation of a friend of his who wishes to remain anonymous.' Knowledge of Epstein’s alleged role was usually kept within a tight circle. In response to the university filing, Cohen wrote to colleagues, 'I did not realize that this would be sent to dozens of people,' adding that Epstein 'is not named but questions could be asked' and that 'I feel uncomfortable that this was distributed so widely.' He wrote that future filings related to Epstein should be submitted only 'if there is a way to do it quietly.' An agent for Gates wrote to the leadership of the Media Lab, stating that Gates also wished to keep his name out of any public discussion of the donation,” reported the New Yorker.
Beyond Gates, Apollo Global Management’s CEO Leon Black is tied to Epstein and directed funds to MIT.
In August, GoLocal reported that Black’s Apollo Global Management is financing the merger of GateHouse Media and Gannett with a $1.79 billion term loan — a loan that comes with a steep interest rate of 11.5%.
The person who is nearly guaranteed to make the most money on this mega-merger deal -- a close friend of registered sex offender Epstein -- is Black. Since 2015, residents of the state of Maine have been allowed to carry a concealed firearm without any special permit, and now the results are in: crime has fallen to the point where the state is now rated the safest in the nation from the threat of crime.
Guns in the hands of honest citizens decrease crime. That is fact that has been statistically demonstrated by John Lott’s pathbreaking book, More Guns, Less Crime, a rick-solid statistical analysis showing that when states pass “shall issue” concealed carry laws, crime goes down. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors should take note.
