Is it ok to lie cheat steal etc if it benefits your family? Is it OK to break the 10 Commandments if it benefits your family? Is it OK to do something dishonorable if it benefits your family?
Apparently there are a lot of people who do.
What about borderline areas that are legal but kinda dishonorable?:
A lawyer lying in court to get his client off.
Selling legal drugs but ones that you know do not work.
Giving vaccinations you know do not work.
Lying as an actor to make your living.
Selling porn.
Usury aka Banking.
Shifty timeshares with lots of small print and hard sales.
Advertising.
These are also things that have been traditionally frowned on by Christians, and often things that have professionally gone to the Jewish community. They are willing to do these sorts of things because they are willing to do anything for the family.
These are all things we would look askance at but are legal. We would feel uncomfortable doing them. In order to do them one would have to be maybe just a little bit of a sociopath to do. In fact sociopaths make up about 10% && of the American populace. Most just work at what they do to earn a living. They may lie, cheat, and steal, but they do it legally.
Consider the Mafia. They cross the line over into illegal behavior:
Sex trafficking
Prostitution
Illegal drugs
Protection rackets
Bribery
Theft
Murder
They think it is ok because it is for the family. They have strong family values.
They do not care what it does to other people so long as the family benefits. What we think of as honor is not a part of the equation. In their world honor is doing right by the family. Mafia. Ma Familia.
Similarly in America we have seen tribalism in racial groups such as in the thieving Somali immigrants in Minnesota. La Raza is an explicitly racist Hispanic organization with everything "for the race." La Raza. The race.
Nationalism can be like this too: It doesn't matter what happens to other countries citizens so long as our country's citizens are taken care of. America First.
National values. Tribal values. Family values.
All involve honor only to a group and denied to other groups.
For some reason it is ok for a mafia member to do anything at all to someone outside the family. He can rape and kill a woman outside the family but would kill to protect his own family women.
