Another Chinese Scientist Charged with Smuggling Biological Material into U.S.
Police arrested Chinese national Chengxuan Han on Sunday, charging her with smuggling biological materials into the U.S. and making false statements. Like COVID-19, Han is from Wuhan.
According to court documents, border officials discovered Han sent four packages containing “biological material related to round worms” from China both this year and last, and lied about it to officers during questioning. She also deleted the content of her electronic device just three days before traveling to America.
“The alleged smuggling of biological materials by Chengxuan Han is a direct threat to public safety and national security, and it severely compromises the integrity of our nation’s research institutions,” the FBI said on Monday.
The arrest comes just one week after law enforcement charged another Chinese national with smuggling samples of a dangerous crop-killing fungus into the United States.
