U.S. immigration officials raided numerous Mississippi food processing plants Wednesday, arresting 680 mostly Latino workers in what marked the largest workplace sting in at least a decade.
The raids, planned months ago, happened just hours before President Donald Trump was scheduled to visit El Paso, Texas.
Workers filled three buses — two for men and one for women — at a Koch Foods Inc. plant in tiny Morton, 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of Jackson. They were taken to a military hangar to be processed for immigration violations. About 70 family, friends and residents waved goodbye and shouted, "Let them go! Let them go!" Later, two more buses arrived.
A tearful 13-year-old boy whose parents are from Guatemala waved goodbye to his mother, a Koch worker, as he stood beside his father. Some employees tried to flee on foot but were captured in the parking lot.
About 600 agents fanned out across the plants involving several companies, surrounding the perimeters to prevent workers from fleeing.
Last year, the administration hit a landscaping company near Toledo, Ohio, and a meatpacking plant in eastern Tennessee. The former owner of the Tennessee plant was sentenced to 18 months in prison last month.
A hangar at the Mississippi National Guard in Flowood, near Jackson, was set up with 2,000 meals to process employees for immigration violations on Wednesday. There were seven lines, one for each location that was hit. Buses had been lined up since early in the day to be dispatched to the plants.
Koch Foods, based in Park Ridge, Illinois, is one of the largest poultry producers in the U.S. and employs about 13,000 people, with operations in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Ohio and Tennessee. The company has no relation to prominent conservative political donors and activists Charles and David Koch.

WASHINGTON—Immigrants legally in the U.S. will be ineligible for green cards if they use any of an array of social programs, and prospective immigrants will be barred from entry if they can’t convince a consular officer that they will never use such programs, as part of a final rule published by the Trump administration.
The rule, issued by the Department of Homeland Security, is one of the most ambitious and sweeping elements of the Trump administration’s immigration policy, according to administration officials as well as immigrant-rights advocates opposed to the change.
The administration was all but guaranteeing fresh criticism from immigration groups for opting to push ahead in the wake of shootings in El Paso, Texas, that were apparently motivated by anti-immigrant animus. Similar sentiments were expressed after Immigration and Customs Enforcement carried out raids on food processing plants in Mississippi last week.
The rule change tightens the definition of who is likely to become a “public charge” under immigration law, a designation that prevents an immigrant from obtaining legal permanent residence, and which is also used by the Justice and State departments to determine which noncitizens can be removed from the country or prevented from ever entering.
Use or potential use of a benefits program such as Medicaid, housing assistance or food stamps could now disqualify an applicant, including around 900,000 immigrants currently in the U.S.

“To protect benefits for American citizens, immigrants must be financially self-sufficient,” President Donald Trump said.
The White House announced on Monday that the Trump Administration will enforce longstanding immigration law that prohibits immigrants from abusing public benefits.
To be clear, this new rule does not impact humanitarian-based immigration programs such as for refugees or asylum-seekers.
“Today, USCIS, the agency I head as part of the Department of Homeland Security has issued a rule that encourages and ensures self reliance and self sufficiency for those seeking to come to or to stay in the United States,” Acting Director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services Ken Cuccinelli said.
“Through the public charge rule, President Trump’s administration is reenforcing the ideals of self-sufficiency and personal responsibility ensuring immigrants are able to support themselves and become successful here in America,” Cuccinelli added.
“An alien who receives public benefits above a certain threshold is known as a “public charge.”” the White House said in a press release.
“Aliens will be barred from entering the United States if they are found likely to become public charges. Aliens in the United States who are found likely to become public charges will also be barred from adjusting their immigration status,” The White House said.
This rule is expected to officially be published on Wednesday and will go into effect in mid-October.
“President Donald Trump will enforce a Clinton-era law to ensure that non-citizens do not abuse our public benefit programs and jeopardize the safety net needed by vulnerable Americans,” the White House said in its announcement.

The Trump administration has frozen all Venezuelan government assets in a significant escalation of tensions with socialist leader Nicolás Maduro. It places Washington’s trade relations with the South American country on a par with Cuba, Syria, Iran and North Korea.

Biden, who has made a string of high-profile gaffes this week, continued the trend during a visit to the Iowa State Fair, where he was asked by a student “how many genders” exist.
“There are at least three,” the 76-year-old Biden responded, according to video of the encounter captured by Turning Point USA.
When pushed to name all three genders by the student, Biden retorted by saying, “Don’t play games with me, kid.”

New video footage shows presidential frontrunner Joe Biden forcefully grabbing a young woman by the arm at the Iowa State Fair in response to the woman asking Biden how many genders there are.
The clip shows ‘Katie’ – a college student in Iowa walking up to Biden and asking him, “How many genders are there?”
“Pardon me?” responds Biden, before Katie repeats the question.
“How many genders are there?”
“There are at least three,” responds Biden.
“What are they?” asks Katie.
“Don’t play games with me kid,” responds Biden.
The video then shows Biden grabbing Katie by the arm, turning her around and stating, “By the way, first one to come out for marriage was me,” presumably referring to gay marriage.
“He grabs my arm and pulls me back to make eye contact with him again,” said Katie, adding that the incident made her “very very mad that someone would actually treat me like that.”
Biden’s physical conduct towards the young woman is clearly inappropriate for someone with his reputation and quite shocking for a presidential frontrunner surrounded by cameras.
Back in April, the former Vice President said he would change his behavior after being accused by numerous women of “inappropriate touching,” but it appears as though he hasn’t learned anything.

Fired (and disgraced) former former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe filed suit in federal court Thursday, accusing President Trump of causing his subordinates at the Justice Department to participate in an “unconstitutional plan and scheme” to have him fired.
McCabe was fired the same day he planned to retire.
His firing was part of a broader plan by Trump to “discredit and remove DOJ and FBI employees who were deemed to be his partisan opponents because they were not politically loyal to him,” he said in the suit against the Justice Department, Attorney General William Barr, and FBI Director Christopher Wray.
McCabe also accused then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions, along with Wray and others, of serving as Trump’s “personal enforcers” rather than “the nation’s highest law enforcement officials” and of catering to Trump’s “unlawful whims” instead of “honoring their oaths to uphold the Constitution.” McCabe caught Trump's attention during his time working alongside former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump also fired.
McCabe said that his firing was unjust, and is asking the judge to compel the Justice Department to provide him with back pay, his full pension, and to expunge his record.

Ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf have reported unusual GPS interference, among other problems, and the US believes Iran is to blame.
The Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration issued a warning on Wednesday highlighting threats to commercial vessels posed by Iran. The warning revealed that ships have had a variety of issues when operating in the region, including "spoofed bridge-to-bridge communications from unknown entities falsely claiming to be US or coalition warships."
US defense official told CNN that Iran has GPS jammers operating on Abu Musa Island, an island in the Persian Gulf located near the Strait of Hormuz, adding that the aim is apparently to cause ships and aircraft to inadvertently wander into Iranian waters or airspace, thus justifying a seizure.
