The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of two anti-malaria drugs to treat patients infected by the new coronavirus.
On Sunday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said in a statement that chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine could be prescribed to teens and adults with COVID-19 "as appropriate, when a clinical trial is not available or feasible," after the FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization. President Trump said on Monday that he ordered federal officials to send ventilators directly to hospitals — after he blasted New York for leaving equipment untouched at a New Jersey warehouse.
“We’re sending things directly. We’re not sending it to our big storage areas and then picking it up from there,” Trump said in an interview with “Fox & Friends” on Fox News.
Trump added, “I’m saying go directly, send it directly where they need it. Don’t bring it into our factories, our plants, bring it in directly into the site, the hospital or wherever it’s going, and that’s for ventilators and other things.”
On Friday, Trump revealed that the federal government actually sent “thousands” of ventilators for New York to use, but that they were sitting in a warehouse in Edison, New Jersey. “They were in the warehouse, ready to go, and New York never took them,” Trump said.
Cuomo said Friday night the ventilators were still in storage because “the hospitals don’t need them yet … the hospitals have enough ventilators today.”

FDA issues emergency use authorization for donated hydroxychloroquine sulfate, chloroquine phosphate
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today accepted 30 million doses of hydroxychloroquine sulfate donated by Sandoz, the Novartis generics and biosimilars division, and one million doses of chloroquine phosphate donated by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, for possible use in treating patients hospitalized with COVID-19 or for use in clinical trials. These and other companies may donate additional doses, and companies have ramped up production to provide additional supplies of the medication to the commercial market.

A massive 552 members of the New York City Police Department have tested positive for the coronavirus, including 442 officers.
Additionally, 4,111 NYPD officers are now on sick leave, which accounts for 11.4 percent of the department’s uniformed force. New York has become the US epicenter of the outbreak. As of Friday evening, there have been 25,500 confirmed cases of the Chinese virus and 366 deaths in the five boroughs.

A plurality of COVID-19 cases in New York City are among those aged 18 to 44, but severity rates tend to follow global trends when it comes to age and underlying conditions, data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene reveals.
Of the 15,597 confirmed as of Tuesday afternoon, 7,094, or 46 percent, were in patients below the 45. In that age group, 9 percent of people with the novel coronavirus have been hospitalized, and there have been five deaths.
All told, the data suggests the city is in line with other countries like Italy, which has reported that the majority of patients experiencing severe cases of COVID-19 are in older age groups, though that certainly doesn't mean younger people aren't at risk. In New York, more than one-fifth of fatalities have occurred in the 45 to 64 range.

In Philadelphia, for example, the Police Department has been instructed its offices to temporarily stop making arrests for certain nonviolent crimes – including drug offenses, burglary, economic theft and vandalism – until next month amid the coronavirus outbreak. According to the memo, obtained by The Philadelphia Inquirer, arresting officers would detain the offender, process the paperwork, and then release the offender back into the general population. The announcement came 24 hours after Philadelphia courts closed until April 1 to limit the spread of the coronavirus.
Meanwhile, across the country in Fort Worth, Texas, the police will cease arresting people for “low-level crimes” – Class C misdemeanors such as thefts involving less than $100 and vandalism – if a citation can be issued in its place, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
Social Distancing works: Quarantining infected people and their family members, closing schools, and imposing workplace distancing and homeworking can all limit the spread, the study found, but a combination of all three is most effective in reducing cases.
Published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases journal, the study, conducted by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS), looked at a simulated Singapore setting to analyse the potential impact of social distancing policies.
It found that while less effective than the combined three-pronged approach, quarantine plus workplace measures presented the next best option for reducing COVID-19 cases, followed by quarantine plus school closure, and then quarantine only.

Cuomo averts having his whole state locked down with a full quarantine by taking action:
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced orders for residents to stay at home over rising COVID-19 concerns — and said that the lockdown could last up to four months. In a Friday press conference, Cuomo said that the stay at home order could last, “two, three, four months.” “This is the most drastic action we can take,” Cuomo said.
Cuomo said that things like “solitary exercise” would be allowed, but that the state would be “aggressive” in enforcing the rules.
The move follows California Governor Gavin Newsom’s shelter in place order from Thursday. “This is not life as usual. Accept it. Realize it. And deal with it,” Cuomo said. He asked the public to “remain indoors to the greatest extent possible to protect physical and mental health. Your actions can affect my health; that’s where we are. We are all in quarantine.“
The governor said that mass transit, restaurants, food delivery and banks would remain open. A full list of businesses that are allowed to remain open is expected to be released on Friday afternoon. “Non-essential” businesses will be closed.
“These are legal provisions,” Cuomo said. “They will be enforced.”
