President Donald Trump is pushing a plan that demands allies pick up the full cost of hosting U.S. troops in their countries, plus a 50 percent premium for the privilege of American protection, according to a news report. Called “Cost Plus 50,” the plan would cost five or six times more for countries like Germany, Japan and South Korea, Bloomberg news reported Friday.
Trump has been championing the idea for months, Bloomberg reported, citing about a dozen unnamed administration officials. Trump even tested the idea during recent negotiations over a cost sharing agreement with South Korea, which was on the brink of collapse before a deal was finally reached in February.
“We want cost plus 50,” Trump demanded at one point during the talks, as quoted by the media organization.
While the U.S. eventually backed off the demand, the idea hasn’t gone away and could be used to pressure allies to increase their own defense budgets. For two years, Trump has railed against allies, especially in Europe, who Trump has described as security free riders unwilling to pay for their own defense.

A manager at Google allegedly cautioned a lower-level employee for questioning the company’s stance on “fake news,” telling him that the company had to stop fake news and “hate speech,” because “that’s how Trump won,” according to a post aired publicly by another Google employee on social media.
Mike Wacker, a software engineer at Google, published on social media a redacted email he claims he received from a fellow employee in 2017, which alleged political bias at the company. According to Wacker’s post, his colleague at Google wrote:
Also, I posted a comment on a meme regarding fake news on Search and someone reported it to [Human Resources]. I didn’t say I was in favor or against, just cautioned that we need to be car[e]ful. My manager brought it up in our 1:1 last week. Made me feel very uncomfortable for having an opposing view. He said we need to stop hate [speech] and fake news because that’s how Trump won the election. [emphasis ours]I obviously didn’t say anything and just wanted it to end. I [redacted] would like to see all managers be required to take political bias training.
The employee also alleged the existence of official training courses at Google dedicated to “bashing conservatives and Trump supporters.”

My friend took the course and said he was told he didn’t know how it felt to be a minority because he was a male. This came from the speaker themselves!
Wacker published the email on Twitter, stating that “multiple incidents, multiple concerns, and many conversations have driven my decision to publish this email.”“This incident serves as a good representative example. It is certainly not an isolated incident, and others have had similar experiences.”Other Google employees have told Breitbart News that the company frequently caters to the far-left fringe in its policies. This allegedly includes keeping tampons in men’s restrooms because “some men menstruate,” a presentation by an employee who “identifies” as a “yellow-scaled wingless dragonkin,” and official handouts warning managers that values like “individual achievement” and “objectivity” are examples of “white dominant culture.” Breitbart News exclusively published a leaked video recorded shortly after the 2016 election in which Google’s leadership team professed outrage at the election of Trump, as well as their determination to make the worldwide populist movement a “blip” or a “hiccup” in history.More recent stories have revealed how the stated aims of Google’s leaders are playing out in practice, including what the tech giant’s own researchers describe as a “shift toward censorship,” the deliberate suppression of conservative content in search results on YouTube and elsewhere (something one Google employee described as a “smoking gun” proving political bias), and the funding of establishment conservatives to shift the movement away from so-called “incendiary nationalism.”Despite the mounting evidence of political bias at Google, company spokespeople have maintained to Breitbart News that the company does not let political bias affect its products. According to the state, Federal Emergency Management Agency plans to reimburse California for only $333 million of the cost, instead of the $639 million sought by California.
The Trump administration is refusing to pay more than $300 million in federal funds California sought to repair the Oroville Dam, which suffered a spillway crisis in 2017 after heavy rains that led to nearly 200,000 residents getting evacuated downstream from the nation’s tallest earthen dam.
State officials worked to plug a hole in the flood-control spillway and put the estimate to repair the dam at about $1.1 billion back in 2018. But the Federal Emergency Management Agency plans to reimburse California for only $333 million of the cost, instead of the $639 million sought by the state.
The administration’s rejection of $306 million in costs for the Oroville Dam means the federal government would pay less than one third of the total cost the state was forced to spend on the emergency repairs.
According to the California Department of Water Resources, FEMA notified the state this week that “it does not consider some spillway construction to be eligible for reimbursement based on information submitted by DWR to date. DWR will work with FEMA to provide further information to support the department’s assertion that all reconstruction work should be eligible for reimbursement.”

The story in the MIT Technology Review detailed a study about the so-called hipster effect — “the counterintuitive phenomenon in which people who oppose mainstream culture all end up looking the same.”
The inclusion of a version of a Getty Images photo of a bearded, flannel-wearing man, tinted with a blue and orange hue, prompted one reader to write to the magazine: “Your lack of basic journalistic ethics in both the manner in which you ‘reported’ this uncredited nonsense, and the slanderous, unnecessary use of my picture without permission demands a response, and I am, of course, pursuing legal action.”
